I grew up on a farm near Callaway, Nebraska. In college I was active at the Newman Center and attended charismatic prayer group. During college I discerned that I should seek the vocation of marriage rather than the priesthood. After I completed a master’s degree in counseling, I took off for Houston, Texas, where I entered and completed graduate school. Also, by the grace of God I was a part of my future wife’s family before I dated and married Debbie. With my degree in clinical neuropsychology we moved to Kearney, Nebraska, where I worked for a couple of years at Good Samaritan Hospital before I went into private practice for 20 plus years. In 2012 I was ordained a deacon in the Grand Island diocese. I was scheduled to give blood the day of my ordination, which I did. Afterwards, I look back at that act and reflect on how giving blood and being called to the diaconate are both acts of giving of self so others may live. God called me to come to Cedar Rapids to serve him as a neuropsychologist and a deacon. I have not discerned what avenue of service God wants me to provide, but I am open to follow his lead. At St. Pius, I bring communion to Keystone Place each month, do pre-baptism classes, proclaim the Gospel and preach, and preside at weddings and baptisms.
