Deacon Al Scharosch
Hello to all my fellow parishioners of St. Pius X. I graduated from high school in 1950 and 2 years later was drafted into the military. After basic training, I served in Korea from 1953-1954. Then after a few years in the automotive business, I entered and graduated from North Dakota State University in 1965 with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and began my career with Collins Radio and Rockwell International as an Engineering Writer. In late 1967, after settling in NE Cedar Rapids in the home my wife, Irene, and I still occupy, we joined St. Pius X Parish. At the time, Fr. Collins was the pastor and one day he introduced me to his brother, who was visiting from Canada, as his “deacon.” That planted the seed for my application and eventual acceptance into the newly established Diaconal Ministry in the Archdiocese of Dubuque. Ordained in November of 1978, I have devoted my entire ministry to this wonderful parish. Since my official retirement at age 75, I still do occasional Baptisms, regular visits to the local nursing home and take my turn with the other deacons in making hospital visits to parishioners and weekly registration of new parish members. I have always enjoyed being of service to this wonderful parish and especially to the really great pastors and associates we have been blessed with other the years. God has greatly blessed me and for that I am most grateful and extend a warm thank you to you my fellow parishioners.
