Born in Grand Forks, North Dakota in 1963, I was the second youngest of six children. My family was very strong practicing Catholics. After graduating from the University of North Dakota in 1985 with a baccalaureate in electrical engineering, I came to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to work for Rockwell Collins. While working I earned my masters in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Iowa. I worked at Rockwell Collins for nearly 35 years as an engineer, an engineering leader and finally Chief Security Officer.
When I first came to Cedar Rapids, I joined St. Pius X parish and was very active in the young adults group, music ministry and teaching 7th grade religious education. In 1986, I married my wife Mary, who I met at the St. Pius X young adults group. Shortly after getting married, we moved to the Northwest side of town and attended St. Jude’s parish. We moved to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parish in 1993. Mary and I have four children, Sr. Louis Marie (Kristin), Michael, Katie, and Tyler. All four attended St. Pius X Elementary, Regis Middle School and Xavier High School.
Prior to diaconal formation, I was involved in a number of ministries at my various parishes. These included music, teaching religious education, RCIA, parish council, men’s ministry, Teens Encounter Christ (TEC), and Christian Experience Weekends for adults (CEW). After my ordination to the diaconate in 2017, I was assigned to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton where I have continued in some of the same ministries as before and gotten more involved in youth ministry and ministry at care facilities.
In February of 2020, after retiring from Collins Aerospace, I was blessed to be asked to extend my ministry to include supporting St. Pius X parish. I am now jointly assigned at St. Pius X parish and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish. My ministry here at St. Pius X parish continues to expand, but at present, in addition to assisting at mass and preaching, I am presiding at benediction for Eucharistic adoration, wake services, funerals outside of mass, baptisms, and weddings. I am also the Cedar Rapids deanery director for Christian Experience Weekends which I would strongly recommend to anyone looking for an opportunity for spiritual growth.
